Odyssey Con II - March 2002

And the survey said...

There was a total of 15 surveys submitted this year; a significant decrease from last year's 38 surveys submitted. This is not so great for gathering information, but much easier to evaluate statistically (hey...I had to take that class TWICE!).

Question One: On a scale of 1-5 or N/A, how important was each of the following to your finding out about and deciding to attend Odyssey Con?

Average
N/A or
no response
Posters/flyers at other conventions
2.89
6
Posters/flyers in stores and public places
2.56
6
November mailing
2.64
4
March mailing
2.64
4
Promotional parties
2.00
8
Email notices
3.71
7
Word of mouth
3.00
4
News in media
1.83
9
Personal contact by Odyssey Staff
4.25
7
Website
3.7
5
Other
15

Of note-many of the numbers are statistically similar; except:

  • Email notices ...this is "note" worthy
  • Mailings...it is somewhat humorous that these numbers are the same, as the individual surveys clearly indicated a specific preference between the November and March mailings
  • Word of mouth
  • Personal contact from Odyssey staff..."they like us, they really-really like us!",
Perhaps we should let them know where we gather socially?
  • And news in media...guess that is good to know...or not...

Question two: On a scale of 1-5 or N/A, how would you rate each of the following?

Average
N/A or
no response
Panels
3.75
3
Con suite
3.92
2
Costume contest
2.8
11

4.2
5
Registration
3.42
1
Guest of honor speeches
3.75

Parties
3.56
6

3.33
6
Opening ceremonies
3.75
7
The hotel
3.83
3
Dealer's room
3.58
3
Mailings
3.22
6

Of note...it appears that most programming provided by this convention is pretty popular, with "gaming" coming in the highest and all ranking above the mean. The scores are not too much different from last year, with the exception in the area of gaming (hoping those of you who encouraged "gamers" to fill out surveys recognize that your efforts were not in vain!)

Question Three: List a few of your favorite things....

(These are in alphabetical order, not in order of importance, or who writes bigger and/or darker)

(In "( )" are the number of specific references to a particular area, and or specific comments)

Car wars
Con Suite food (5)
Dealer's room (2)
Drumming with Uncle Don (2)
Free stuff (2)
Gaming (specifically mentioned: BBSM, Buffy, and gaming panels) (7)
Good attitude of workers/volunteers
Guests
Location (local)
Movies (2)
Masquerade
Panels (2)
Parties (TOR was mentioned specifically 3 times-yeah Jim!)
Smaller, more personal
Specifically listed-Erik Larson and Richard Russell (although, they are "people, not things")
Timing of panels (nothing "early morning")

I particularly enjoyed this comment: "great combination of an intimate Con with larger than life guests and panelists. The panels were well balanced with a broad spectrum of views"

Question Four: what new things would you like to add to the convention next year, or see more of?

Anime
Art Show
Auction (specifically mentioned: charity) (2)
Buffy (2)
Filking
Gaming (specifically mentioned: Buffy, macrophilia, giantesses)
Interaction between gamers, and "full access"
Lunch or dinner breaks (2)
Maintaining the quality of the current Con suite-good food
Movies
Panels (specifically mentioned: mechanics of gaming, weird digression (2)

Costumes
Dealer's room (3)
Drumming
Filking
Gaming (specifically mentioned: RPG) (6)

Question Six: what other SF/Fantasy or media conventions have you gone to?

Furry Cons (confurence, further confusion, mephrFurMeet, Midwest Fur Fest)
GenCon (2)
Ifuscon
MadCon (2)
Mad Media Con (2)
MiniCon (2)
Origions
Star Trek
WindyCon (2)
WisCon (6)
WorldCon (2)
" Zillions and Zillions for the past 25 years"

And one person is attending 17 cons this year, 4 of which are listed above (such energy!!)

Question Seven: We might be able to get a better deal from the hotel if the convention if the convention was held on Easter weekend in the future. Would you go to Odyssey con if it were held on Easter weekend?

Yes (8)
No (3)
Maybe so (2)

AND: "NO...Do not even think of conflicting with MiniCon" (obviously this person was present for the Con Suite discussion that took place at the end of OddCon during clean up... one of the "500 closest friends"??)

Question Eight: Are you interested in volunteering to help run Odyssey Con next year? If so, doing what? AND Question Nine: Are you interested in being on panels at odyssey con next year? If so, what type of panels?

To those who answered "no", feel free to contact us when you have changed your mind (or if it is changed for you...).

For those who answered "yes", we have recorded your name...but, feel free to contact us if you are wondering what is taking so long.

Many of you offered great suggestions-you could make them happen. We don't have the technology to assimilate you, but you can make the choice for yourself.
