Odyssey Con VII - Adventures of SuperMoo
‘Truth, Justice, and the Milkyway!’
“Fannish fandango SuperMoo, it looks like trouble in Moo-Tropolis!”
Odyssey Con is coming back for a seventh year. We return to the The Radisson Inn on Madison’s west side, April 13-15, 2007, with more great panels, dealers’ room, gaming, an art show, and new media programming.
Odyssey Con is a general interest Science Fiction and Fantasy convention. We feature literary guests, panel discussions, demonstrations, film reviews, art work, musical acts, and much more. With around 350 members, we have a great guest-to-attendee ratio. If you are a first time attendee, or a long time 'fan', you'll find OddCon is an enjoyable, entertaining and comfortable convention. It's easy to join, send in a registration form or register at the door, and enjoy a weekend of interesting ideas and fun events. Invite your friends to join! Everyone's invited! (well, except for the vampires, pretty sure we're not supposed to invite them...)
Our Guests of Honor
Hugo Award winning author Joan D. Vinge is the author of the Hugo Award-winning novel Snow Queen, which is on many lists as one of the classic works of SF. Joan has written many novels in both science fiction and fantasy, such as the Psion (which tells of young men and women with psychic powers in the not too distant future) and Tangled Up in Blue (which sets a police detective in the Snow Queen’s world). Joan’s work includes several adaptations of movies to the printed page, young-adult fiction, and three collections of short stories. Ever versatile, Joan is currently working on a novel set in Bronze Age Europe. Joan is a long-time resident of Madison, where she lives with her husband, Tor Books editor Jim Frenkel.
Jack McDevitt, has won praise as an author who writes science fiction with real people and real science. Jack’s novels frequently deal with first contact with alien intelligence (as in DeepSix, and Chindi) or deal with the future with an historian’s eye to events (as in A Talent for War). Jack is an engaging speaker who brings his many interests to discussions. Jack lives in Georgia with his wife Maureen. His most recent novel released in November, continues his series of first-contact space adventures and is entitled Odyssey. Coincidence? You be the judge.
Professional Comic Book Artist Christopher Jones has previously appeared at Odyssey Con with fellow illustrator John Kovalic, and we are pleased to have him this year as a guest of honor in his own right. Besides working with Kovalic on Dr. Blink Superhero Shrink, he has worked for DC Comics for many years, where his current project is Batman Strikes!, and has been a regular contributor to Justice League Adventures and many other comics. Chris has a second life as a major fan, being one of the co-founders of ConVergence in the Twin Cities.
Other Panelists
Among the 50 or more panelists at Odyssey Con VII are Tor Books editor Jim Frenkel. Also scheduled to return is John Kovalic, the writer and illustrator of the comic Dork Tower, and the writer of Dr. Blink, and he is Origins Game Award winning illustrator for many popular Steve Jackson Games. The third member of the Dr. Blink team, letterer and colorist Melissa Kaercher will also be along for the fun. Among the many local and regional fan and author panelists are film aficionados Richard S. Russell to give his annual review of the SF and fantasy films, and Eric Larson, founder of FilmCon.
Banff! KaPow! BarZoom! - Programming
In keeping with the varied interests of our guests of honor, there will be a wide variety of programming and events in four separate tracks, plus one run by FilmCon. Also, Krushenko’s, which has been hosting casual literary salons at Minnesota SF conventions, makes its third trip to Odyssey Con this year. Odyssey Con will have a writers’ workshop for science fiction and fantasy writers to share short pieces of writing and receive critiques, and there will also be an open-mic poetry reading on Saturday night. On Saturday at 4:30PM there will be book signings by our authors. Further programming details will appear on our website www.oddcon.com.
Dynamic Dice Rolls! - Gaming
Responding to our members’ requests, gaming will focus on open gaming and game demo events. Special gaming events and guests are to be announced. Again this year there will be special LAN and X-Box gaming, and DDR. Wii! For further info on gaming or to sign up to host a game, e-mail Amarlor Myrnnyx at rpgsheets@charter.net.
Mammoth Media! - Programming on Film and Video Production
For the third year FilmCon will be running a track of programming at Odyssey Con. FilmCon programming focuses on the making of films and TV and is geared toward being educational about the many aspects of film-making: costume design, computer graphics, sound, special effects, art direction, and all the other crafts. This year in honor of OddCon beginning on Friday the 13th, FilmCon will focus on horror films and will bring in supernatural experts, including Linda Godfrey, Jennifer Lauer and Dave Schumacher.
Quick, they’re getting away with the loot! - Art Show and Dealers’ Room
Odyssey Con will again have an Art Show. Hanging fees are $0.50 per piece for pieces carried in or $1.00 per mailed piece. There is a maximum of 20 pieces per artist, and display space is on a “first come, first served” basis.
We will also have a dealers’ room with new and returning dealers. Our Dealer's room offers a wide selection of games, books, jewelery and collectables available for purchase.
Holy Hotdogs! - Food and Entertainment
As with previous years, we are offering our crowd-pleasing con suite, featuring pizza, hot dogs, soda, doughnuts, and an automatic espresso machine. There will also be independent party rooms sponsored by fan groups and other conventions. On Saturday night come dressed to the Masquerade as your favorite character, followed later by our midnight Drum Circle. Back again to provide humor is The Great Luke Ski (a Doctor Demento favorite), and new this year is Madison’s favorites The Gothicals. Odyssey Con’s own Barista Liberation Army will present The Adventures of SuperMoo!
